RE: Full Timing and Health Insurance

Hi, if you served in the military, you can us the VA system. Does not cost nothing and it's there for you for serving this great country Not true. Catagory 8 was taken away for cost savings by GW some while back. Now a veteran joins the other uninsured 47 million people in this 'great' country. The only civilians getting military care are disabled vets, iraqi, afgan civies, and gitmo prisoners. You may be a Cat 8 but you were probably grandfathered in before 2003(if memory serves me correctly), when the changes took afect.

RE: Advice on a dedicated boondocking site..........

It takes 10 amps to run it once it starts, and about 14-15 amps to get the thing started and compressing. Look at the same thing for my TT. A 5000-5300 btu Kenmore from Sears run at 4.6-4.9 amps. Figure on double that for starting compressor. Figure I could put it in the escape window with a fan to circulate should be plenty of cooling for me. 2000wt genny should do you fine.

RE: Oil could drop $70 in 30 days.....

No national entity can control a world wide market. Really...The Hunts cornered over 80% of the worlds silver market in the early 1980's sending the price of silver from $2.50oz to $12oz until they were forced to divest their holdings. It was also done through contracts, futures, and physical holdings. Don't underestimated the power of a few greedy people when tons of quick money can be made.

RE: Would ya?

you could 72T your 401k's. That way way you would pay no penalty on your early distributions and if your distribution was $30,000 you would actually pay no taxes either. Ex...$30,000-$11000 (deduction, you and wife)=$19,000 (taxable income)... $19,000-$16,000x(%10 tax bracket)= $3,000x(%15 tax bracket)=$2050 total taxes due-$2,000 tax credit to a Roth IRA, ($1,000 each you and wife)=$50 total taxes paid on $30,000 distribution-$2,000 to IRA's= $28,000 total for living expenses...OR... I would wait for a buyout or 5 years which ever comes first and sock away more money. In order to get a buyout just wait until the company announces layoffs and signal to the right people how safe you are because the company could not run without you and you will get severanced.

RE: Diesel Prices Coming Down?

Gas at $4 gal is cheap compared to 5 years from now. I'm burning all the gas I can. It only take $176 to fill my tank compared to 5 years from now $10 x 44gal= $440. I sometimes idle the engine for hours to to listen to it run. Enjoy the cheap gas now, it will never be cheaper. In answer to the person who thinks $5 gas is cheap in US. Other countries include universal healthcare, unempolyment insurance for life, and other social giveaways included in their gas prices. We do not. I've got news for you, OUR gas isnt cheap compared to other countries.

RE: Ever been snubbed or ashamed because of your RV?

My wife and I tend to look down on tenters, but then again we're sitting 18 inches higher than them.

RE: Towing with old vehicles-worth it?

I've found that people who drive older vehicles, especially to tow with, are kind of income-challenged. I must be the exception, far from income challenged, I'm just plain cheap. My vehicles have no trade in value when used up. Every vehicle I have had, except 1, has been towed to the salvage yard. I always buy new and keep them till they die. 99 Suburban, 169000 miles, new remanufactured GM tranny at 157000 miles. $1600 cash price for tranny, $2300 credit price, hhmmm, can we say taking advantage of the income challenged. Paid cash and $400 to install at local shop and I was good again. Will end up hauling sub and trailer to junkyard one of these days and wife to the graveyard, and then buy everything new again. (except for wife, must be over 18, or 13 in West Virginia. Boy I bet this one gets edited).

RE: RENTING YOUR RV OUT CAN BE VERY EXPENSIVE

Wow. not meaning to belittle anybody but this one falls into the category of common sense. A person should not have to be told to not pitch a tent on the railroad tracks or play volleyball on the interstate. I couldn't imagine letting anyone, especially strangers use my setup. Sorry for your troubles. Experience can be the best teacher, I know, I have been schooled very well. Even though, I still find myself telling my teenage son not to wave a graphite golf club at the lightening, in the backyard, in a thunderstorm, or not to drive with his eyes close. Good luck...

RE: My wacky grey water filter experiment.

At home I keep the grey water cracked open and let it dribble onto the ground in the backyard. Got to be cleaner than whats coming out of my septic system. If camping without full hookups I will drain 5 gal at a time into my 5 gal blue tote and dump it around a tree or bush at night. I make sure it not near any fresh water source though.

RE: Social Security Early----Or Not

Or that Social Security will still be around. It's slated to go bankrupt within a few years. False statement. SS is scheduled to pay out more than it takes in in a few years. It will start cashing in govt IOUs in 2018. In 2042 or 2052,(according to CBO), it will take in enough to pay 73% of benefits. Boy when I see blanketed, fear mongering, ignorant statements like the above I really have to bite my tongue. Medicare is the big issue, not SS. I plan on doing the 521 and pay back all my early benefits in inflated dollars and take the larger max ed out payments at 70, assuming I'm in good health and the govt doesn't change the benefits in any way. Big assumption.

RE: Social Security Early----Or Not

Scott Burns had a column in the recent past that if I recall correctly indicated you could draw early - then repay and redraw at the higher rate should you have made it that far (sorry don't have it ready to hand) That is correct. Its called a 521 form. You pay back all benefits collected by you at the earlier age and then you can draw the higher benefit amount at a later age.

RE: Stayed too Long @ WMart

Something else that may ruin free stopovers at Walmarts and other places. Some people treat these parking lots like campgrounds, staying for days with assorted gear out and about. Now people are dying there too. If you want to camp, go to a campground, if you want to die, go to a hospital. All we need now are campground owners and hospitals breathing down our backs.

RE: Propane Consumption?

An 8 cf reefer will use a 1/4 gallon a day at 77 deg F. But I run my fridg at 35-42 deg. How long would 1 gallon last?

RE: BLM 14 day limit enforced?

The 14 day rule can be enforced. But here's the loophole; moving every 14 days doesn't mean moving to an entirely new location, only has to mean pulling forward or backward a couple of feet and parking again. You have to move 25 miles. A little more than backing up or moving forward.

RE: Getting the trailer inspected

Haven't had mine inspected since I bought it in Mar 2004. Ask one of the Sheriff deputies what the consequences would be if caught. She said I would have a choice of being 'roughed up' with a warning or just taking a ticket. Considering she is very cute and single I would opt for the warning if caught.
